Smoke Alarm Troubleshooting

Is your Smoke Alarm 'Nuisance Alarming?' The solution may be very simple - please read on, and click to follow the links.

There are a number of reasons why a smoke alarm may sound. The very first step, is to ensure there is no danger - carefully check surrounds for any sign of fire or smouldering material.

If your alarm is sounding for no apparant reason, consider the following:

(a) Is the alarm too close to an air vent? Often the first time an air conditioner or heater is used for a while, it will have gathered dust. This, blowing into the photoelectric chamber of the alarm, can cause nuisance alarming.

(b) Tiny insects in the photoelectric chamber can cause nuisance alarming.

(c) Momentary spike in power supply.

Normally, once the alarm has recorded a fault, after a recalibration phase, it will resume normal operation. Occasionally, for no apparant reason, the alarm may continue to sound continuously, or at random intervals. If this is the case, you need to try a simple smoke alarm reset.
